In the steel industry, the term “Gauge” is often used. Gauge represents the thickness of the metal sheet. Different gauge codes have different thicknesses.
Gauges are commonly measured in inches and millimeters. How do you trade off the two? You can find the conversion of galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and mild steel gauge inches to millimeters in the table below.
For metal sheet gauges, the larger the gauge code, the thinner the metal sheet is. For example, for metal sheets of the same material, gauge 18 is thicker than gauge 20. You can clearly see this from the table.
