Overview: The calculated steel plate weight is very important for you to obtain the steel plate cost. Only when we know the total weight of the steel plate you need and then learn the price of one ton from the steel plate manufacturer, can we calculate the total price of your steel purchase. This article mainly introduces the calculation formulas of steel plates of different materials, including galvanized steel plates, stainless steel plates, corrugated steel plates, color steel plates, cold/hot rolled steel plates.
Formula for calculating the weight of galvanized steel sheet
The data you need to know when calculating the weight of galvanized steel plates include: thickness, length, width, and zinc layer weight.
The galvanizing amount represents the thickness of the zinc layer, usually in g/㎡.
Steel sheet name | Galvanized steel sheet |
Calculation formula | Weight=7.85*L(m)*W(m)*T(mm)+Zinc layer weight |
Symbol Meaning | L represents length, W represents width, and T represents thickness |
Example | Length is 2500mm, width is 1200mm, thickness is 3mm. Weight = 7.85*2.5*1.2*3+0.5325=71.1825kg |
Zinc layer weight calculation formula:
Zinc layer weight = zinc layer thickness * zinc density * steel plate area
For example: zinc layer thickness 25μm, steel plate length 2500mm, width 1200mm, density 7.1.
First calculate the zinc weight: zinc weight (g/m²) = 25μm * 7.1 = 177.5 (g/m²)
Coating weight = 177.5 * (2.5 * 1.2) = 532.5g = 0.5325kg
Assuming that the zinc layer thickness of a zinc steel plate is, the mass of the zinc layer needs to be converted into g/m². The specific calculation method is as follows:
Zinc weight (g/m²) = 25μm * 7.14 = 178.5 (g/m²) Therefore, the mass of the zinc layer of the zinc steel plate is 178.5g/m².
Density of various types of galvanized layers
Coating Type | Density(g/cm2) |
Pure zinc coating(Z) | 7.1 |
Zinc-iron alloy coating(ZF) | 7.1 |
Zinc-aluminum alloy coating(ZA) | 6.6 |
Aluminum-zinc alloy coating(Az) | 3.8 |

The table shows the weight of the zinc layer with a density of 7.1g/cm³

Notes:
When calculating, pay attention to the conversion of units. For example, 2500mm in the above table should be converted to 2.5m for calculation; the coating weight of 532.5g should be converted to kg.
Generally, the weight of the zinc layer is rarely added in actual application, because the weight of the zinc layer accounts for a very small proportion of the overall weight.
Stainless steel plate weight calculation formula
When calculating the weight of a stainless steel plate, you need to know the width, length, thickness and density of the stainless steel plate, and calculate the weight of the stainless steel plate based on the above data.
Steel sheet name | Stainless steel plate |
Calculation formula | Weight=L(m) x W(m) x T(mm) x density(7.93g/cm³) |
Symbol Meaning | L represents length, W represents width, and T represents thickness |
Example | A stainless steel plate with a length of 200cm, a width of 100cm and a thickness of 10mm, its weight = 2*1*10*7.93=158.6kg |
Corrugated steel sheet (roof sheet) weight calculation formula
When calculating the weight of corrugated steel sheet, it is important to note the total width and effective width of the roof steel sheet. When calculating the weight of the corrugated steel sheet, the total width should be used.
Steel sheet name | Corrugated steel sheet |
Calculation formula | Weight=L(m) x W(m) x T(mm) x density(7.85g/cm³) |
Symbol Meaning | L represents length, W represents width (overall width), and T represents thickness |
Example | A corrugated steel plate with an effective width of 900mm, a total width of 1000mm and a thickness of 0.3mm has a weight of 1*0.3*7.85=2.355kg/m |

Calculation formula for other steel plates
The weight calculation formula for color-coated steel plates, cold rolled steel plates,hot-rolled steel plates and corrugated steel plates is the same as follows:
Weight (kg): length (m) * width (m) * thickness (mm) * density (7.85g/cm³)
For example, if the length of the steel plate is 3 meters, the width is 1 meter, and the thickness is 0.4 mm, the weight = 3*1*0.4*7.85=9.42kg
