The Role of Each Element in 316L Stainless Steel
- Carbon (C): extremely low content (≤0.03%) to reduce the formation of chromium carbide, thereby improving intergranular corrosion resistance.
- Chromium (Cr): the main alloying element (16%-18%), forming a dense chromium oxide protective film to provide corrosion resistance.
- Nickel (Ni): stabilizes austenite structure, improves toughness, corrosion resistance and welding performance.
- Molybdenum (Mo): enhances pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, especially in chloride ion environments.
- Manganese (Mn): improves strength and processing performance while stabilizing austenite structure.
- Silicon (Si): acts as a deoxidizer to improve the casting performance and corrosion resistance of stainless steel.
- Phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S): impurity elements, the content needs to be controlled at a low level to avoid adverse effects on performance.
- Nitrogen (N): improves strength and corrosion resistance while stabilizing austenite structure.
