Introduction

400mm steel sheet piles (known in the industry as No. 4 Larsen steel sheet piles) are U-shaped hot-rolled steel sheet piles widely used in civil engineering. Characterized by their standard width of 400mm, they balance portability, structural strength, and construction efficiency, making them a core material for excavation shoring, cofferdam projects, and bank protection construction.

  1. Width/Height/Thickness: 400mm, approx. 170mm, 15-16mm
  2. Custom Lengths: Standard lengths include 6, 9, 12, and 15 meters; custom lengths are also available.
  3. Material Options: Various grades including Q235B, Q345B, and S355GP, compliant with GB or international standards, ensuring quality assurance.
  4. Surface Treatment: Anti-corrosion coatings, galvanization, and other treatments enhance corrosion resistance and extend service life.

Specification Advantages

The cross-sectional design of the 400mm steel sheet piles has been mechanically optimized, and the 400mm width is key to balancing construction and performance:

  • Width: Standard 400mm. The moderate coverage area per pile allows for manual handling and reduces the frequency of mechanical lifting, significantly improving construction efficiency.
  • Height: Approximately 170mm, proportionate to the 400mm width, ensuring sufficient flexural stiffness to withstand lateral earth pressure and hydrostatic pressure.
  • Thickness: 15–16mm (standard model). The web and interlocking flanges have balanced thicknesses, optimizing structural strength while controlling self-weight to avoid excessive load during construction.
  • Interlocking Structure: Dedicated interlocking tabs on both sides ensure a tight, seamless joint after assembly, forming a continuous, sealed retaining wall with excellent waterproofing and seepage prevention capabilities to prevent soil collapse and groundwater leakage.

Weight per Meter

The standard material for 400mm steel sheet piles is Q355B. Weight varies according to strength grade, covering standard, reinforced, and lightweight versions to meet diverse load-bearing requirements:

TypesThicknessTheoretical weight per meterApplicable Scenarios
Lightweight15mm≈70 kg/mTemporary cofferdams, emergency rescue projects with tight deadlines
Regular15.5mm≈76 kg/mMost sandy and clay foundation pits (4-6 meters deep)
Reinforced16mm≈82 kg/mSoft soil foundations, sand layers containing groundwater flow, wharf revetments
  • High construction efficiency and flexible installation/removal: The 400mm-wide single pile provides extensive coverage; the vibratory pile driver drives piles quickly, installation is simple, and the piles can be pulled out and reused after completion.
  • Compact footprint: With a pile width of just 0.4 meters, the minimum working aisle for the pile driver can be reduced to 1.8 meters, allowing for flexible pile placement between buildings with less than 2 meters of clearance, making it ideal for dense urban environments.
  • Reliable strength, safe and stable: Made from high-strength steel such as Q355B, it offers high flexural strength. The 400mm width combined with a 170mm height provides a moderate section modulus, ensuring stable support for the soil.
  • Cost-effective and high value for money: Compared to large steel sheet piles, 400mm steel sheet piles have lower procurement and construction costs; compared to smaller piles, the 400mm width reduces the number of joints, provides better waterproofing performance, and offers superior overall value for money.

  • Excavation Shoring for Depths Up to 5 Meters: Used in urban construction and municipal engineering projects involving shallow excavations to rapidly form retaining structures and ensure construction safety.
  • Temporary Coffer Dams: Used for flood control and emergency response, as well as for bridge construction coffer dams. They provide waterproofing and seepage prevention, withstand water flow impacts, and can be quickly erected and dismantled.
  • Pier Shoreline Protection / River Channel Rehabilitation: Resists wave scouring, reinforces riverbanks, prevents soil erosion, and extends the service life of structures.
  • Underground Utility Tunnels / Small Pump Stations: Provides support for medium-depth excavations, suitable for soft soil conditions, with convenient construction and high cost-effectiveness.

  1. Precise Pile Positioning and Surveying: Prior to construction, the centerline and interlock orientation of each 400mm steel sheet pile must be marked on-site in accordance with the design drawings.
  2. Strict Control of Pile Verticality and Construction Accuracy: The pile driving phase is the core process for ensuring the quality of the 400mm steel sheet pile retaining structure. Throughout construction, professional instruments must be used to continuously monitor the verticality of the piles in real time.
  3. Ensuring Secure Interlocking of Locking Mechanisms: Inspect the entire process from pile insertion to final placement. The quality of the interlocking mechanism directly determines the retaining wall’s earth-retaining and waterproofing performance, making it the most critical control point during construction.

Q1: What is the maximum depth that 400mm steel sheet piles can support? Is additional bracing required?

A: The standard type (76 kg/m) has a safe depth of approximately 2.5–3 m in a cantilevered state without bracing; with one steel brace added, it can reach 5 m. The reinforced type (82 kg/m) can reach 3–3.5 m in a cantilevered state; with one brace added, it can support up to 6 m. We do not recommend using 400mm-wide sheet piles for depths exceeding 6m; heavy-duty piles should be used instead.

Q2: When purchasing 400mm steel sheet piles, should you choose the standard or reinforced type? What is the difference?

A: The choice depends primarily on the application. The standard 76 kg/m model offers the best value for money and is suitable for ordinary soil conditions, shallow excavations under 5 meters, standard temporary cofferdams, and riverbank protection. The reinforced 82 kg/m model features a thickened web, providing greater load-bearing capacity and resistance to lateral pressure, making it suitable for complex conditions such as high water levels, soft soil foundations, and heavy-load shoring.

Q3: What are the advantages of 400mm steel sheet piles compared to other widths?

A: Compared to narrow-width steel sheet piles, the 400mm single pile covers a wider area, requiring fewer joints and enabling faster construction. Compared to wide-width heavy-duty steel sheet piles, it is lighter in weight, easier to transport and drive/extract, and does not require large specialized construction equipment, making it particularly suitable for confined urban construction sites.

Q4: How effective is the waterproofing performance of 400mm steel sheet piles?

A: Qualified 400mm steel sheet piles are equipped with standard precision interlocking mechanisms. During construction, as long as the interlocks of adjacent piles are fully engaged without misalignment or loosening, a continuous, sealed retaining wall is formed, providing excellent waterproofing performance under normal conditions.

Q5: Can I customize the length when purchasing 400mm steel sheet piles?

A: We support customization of various lengths, though the price may be higher; standard lengths include 6m, 9m, and 12m (these are the most commonly used lengths).
